A Typical Day In Discovery...

Discovery Club in the Morning
We open our doors at 6:30 am.  When children arrive at Discovery Club they can choose from a variety of activities.  We offer puzzles, games, books, toys, art projects, and a chance to be on one of the computers.  At 7:45 am. children have the option to go to the cafeteria for the school's breakfast.  Our morning ends when we dismiss the children for school at 8:15 am.

Afternoon Discovery Club
Our afternoon begins as soon as school gets out.  Our first through sixth graders go straight to the gym for snack (2:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m).  The kindergarteners are picked up by

our kindergarten group leader and brought to the gym.  After snack, we go outside for 30 minutes to an hour (3:00 - 3:30 or 4 :00 p.m.).

Once our outside time is over, the kids divide into their age appropriate groups.  A group consists of up to 15 kids to 1 adult.  Each group uses the library/computer lab, gym, teacher's lounge, and the Discovery Club Baseroom. Once the kids are in their group, they have quiet time.

During quiet time the kids can do homework, read, or play quiet games. Once a week the kids will be involved in our violence prevention program called Second Step.  Their group leader will pull out a picture card of a child

with a problem.  The kids will talk about the problem and then think of ways in which the problem can be solved.

After quiet time, the kids participate in a variety of group activities (4:00 - 5:00 p.m.).

Our activities include:

  • Gym games
  • Art projects
  • Walking field trips
  • Science experiments
  • Cooking projects
  • Sewing, weaving, and knitting
  • Construction with legos, kynex, and other items
  • Board games and puzzles
  • Creative writing
  • Seasonal Crafts
  • And much, much more!!

So, you can see, Discovery Club at Horace Mann School is a lot of fun!
