Winter Dress Recess is an important part of the school day. Students get the opportunity to work on social skills, develop friendships, and blow off a little steam. During the winter time, we continue to take students outside each day. We take the students out for recess unless the temperature or wind-chill reach unsafe levels. We use the National Weather Service wind-chill chart to help decide. You can find the website at http://www.weather.gov/os/windchill/index.shtml. Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing. If your family or a family you know needs help with winter clothing, please contact the social worker. Here are some clothing tips:

  • Wear boots, scarf, hats, and gloves or mittens
  • Wear a winter coat and snow pants
  • Wear several layers
  • Wear clothing that insulates, shields, and breathes (like wool or polypropylene)

Coffee Packs Available We have sample packs of coffee left over from the Haunted House last Friday. Just $1 apiece. They are great for making a pot of coffee. Stop by the office and pick one up on your way out. I’m sure your co-workers would love a pot of this White Rock treat.

Volunteers for the Bookfair Blizzard! Be the first to see the great books. We can use cashiers and helpers to work a 2-hour shift on 11/15, 11/19, and 11/20.  All volunteers will be entered to win a $3.00 gift certificate to be used at the fair!  One winner each day!  Please call Chris Aerts at 651-699-6575 or email at chrisbillaerts@comcast.net.  THANKS!  Check out the book fair website at http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/horacemannstpaul.

Sentences on a String Help your child get the hang of sentence structure with this mixed up activity. You can also help them learn logical sequencing and summarizing.

Materials: books, pencil, paper, string, two chairs, clothespins or large paper clips.

Start by picking a sentence from one of your youngster’s favorite books. Write each word of the sentence on its own sheet of paper. Mix them up. Next, tie a long piece of string between the backs of two chairs. Then, pin or clip the words to the string. Challenge your child to unscramble the sentence and hang the words in the right order.

Variation: For older readers, copy each sentence of a paragraph on a separate sheet of paper. Mix the papers up and clip them to the string. How quickly can your child put the paragraph in order?

Save Paper and Money Are you interested in helping Horace Mann spend less money on paper and save a few trees? Horace Mann spends about $2300 a year on paper for classroom assignments and notes to parents like this one. Other schools print these materials on re-used paper. We can too. All we need are some businesses willing to donate their paper to Horace Mann. Why not look around your place of work and see whether there is paper which has already been printed on one side which can be donated to Horace Mann? If you need help transporting the paper, the Environmental Committee is available to help. Contact Nancy Wagner at nancyjwagner@comcast.net or 698-6783.
