Another Terrific Year at Exchange City for 5th and 6th graders This month the 5th and 6th graders ran Exchange City for a day. This program is managed through the Junior Achievement Program and the St. Paul Schools. The students learn important life skills such as how to write a resume, fill out a job application, interview for a job and manage a checking account. Then with a partner school they run a pretend city for a day and manage everything from City Hall to the Wellness Center. The kids enjoy interacting with students from other schools and they learn a lot while having a great time. I'd like to thank the following parent volunteers who spent the day with the kids on May 4th or May 18th: Julie Schulz, Paul Schulz, Katie Sterns, Birgit John, Clare Lubar, Lynne Butterfield, Granny Bev Lane, Karl Smelker, Heidi Gunderson, Lauri Jones, Tony Buchl, Lynne Lindholm, Jim Johnson, John Botten, Deb Jopp, Judy Johnson and Jean Schroeder. We couldn't have done it without you!

Thanks, Rosalyn Segal

Summer Band Lessons at Horace Mann School Once again this summer Mr. Fulton will be offering private lessons to all current and former band members as well as incoming 5th grade students here at Horace Mann School. The summer program consists of 6 half-hour one-on-one lessons beginning the week of June 18th (there are no lessons the 4th of July week). The cost of the program is $120 and includes the use of a school instrument for those students who need them for the summer months. This is an excellent opportunity for students to get a jump start on the school year or to continue building the skills learned this year. Registration forms have been sent home with all 4th-6th grade students this week. Please contact Mr. Fulton at Jeff.Fulton@spps.org with any questions or to request an additional registration form. Thanks for making this another great year for band at Horace Mann School.

Keep Your Kids Learning During the Summer Did you know children lose a shocking amount of what they’ve already learned if they’re allowed to “veg out” during the summer? By forgetting about learning during the lazy days of summer, we’re actually harming our child’s education. That means that the kids who put forth just a little bit of effort are going to be way ahead come fall. We owe it to them—and to their futures—to incorporate learning activities into their summers.

3) Set a reading time every day. Set aside a certain time every day where everyone turns off the computer, TV, music, and video games, and spends 15 minutes or more reading. (As busy as parents are, it’s important that you participate as well, even if you just read the newspaper.)

4) Get great recommendations on books for your child. Check out the American Library Association’s lists on Summer Reading and Learning for Children at www.ala.org/ala/alsc/alscresources/summerreading/recsummerreadinecommendedreading.htm. Be sure to sign your kids up for library summer book clubs, too!
