WANTED:  KEMPS & LAND O’LAKES MILK CAPS Every year our school collects milk caps from Kemps and Land O'Lakes milk jugs and proofs of-purchase from Kemp’s cardboard half-gallon containers and sour cream cartons.  Last year we earned $334.00 for the school one nickel at a time.   So far this year we’ve accumulated 1,999 caps and proof of purchases.  Just send any caps or proofs-of-purchase to school with your child or drop them off at the office.  Thanks so much to everyone who has helped by saving caps!

READ-A-THON NEWS! This year’s read-at-thon theme is Reading Rocks!  The read-a-thon will happen during the entire month of February 2007.  A sock hop for families is scheduled for Friday March 2.  We are looking for a DJ for the night of the sock hop.  We need someone who can play appropriate music and help kids and families have fun dancing, and even learning some new moves!  We are also looking for ‘celebrity readers’ who would be willing to read to the Mann student body during the month of February.  If you are able to help with finding readers or with the sock hop, please contact Julie Schulz at 690-4034.

WHAT IF? YOUNG INVENTORS FAIR DEADLINE EXTENDED!    Are you a problem solver?  Do you have creative solutions to problems?  Do you like to tinker with equipment, materials, tools, or ideas?  Are you a doodler?  If you can answer yes to any of these questions, you are just the person to participate in the Horace Mann Inventor’s Fair.  This year the fair will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2007.  Any student in first through sixth grade is welcome to participate.

What is the Inventor’s Fair?  You identify a problem that exists in the world and then you find a solution to the problem.

This is an independent project to work on at home.  I will send home weekly assignments to help keep you on track.  Final projects consist of an invention, display board, inventor’s log, and presentation. Inventions will be judged and the top 2 inventions in each grade 4, 5, and 6 will be eligible to submit an application for the “What If? Young Inventors Regional Fair.” If your invention is selected, you will display your invention with other student inventions from around the state. If your child is interested in participating, turn in the Intent to Invent Form sent home last week.  If you need a new form, see Mrs. Tennyson.

All forms are due by Wednesday, December 20, 2006

PLAYGROUND UPDATE Watch us climb to our goals!!  We have taken our second step toward a new playground and full support of programs inside the building.  A successful book fair and generous community support have helped us climb toward our goal. We have raised $20,000.00 but we have many more steps until we can slide into a completed job.  How can you help?  Consider a year-end  donation, support our fundraisers, volunteer!  Any questions call: Susan Lawrenz-Smith (291-8898, slawrenz99@hotmail.com).

WHEN DOES HORACE MANN SCHOOL PULL SCHOOL PATROLS? The question has been asked, “When will school patrols be pulled from their corners?  While it is extremely infrequent that school patrols might be pulled from their assignments, this does occasionally happen.  This may happen if threatening weather is in an area around the school such as frequent lightning, a tornado warning or wind chills in the neighborhood of minus 20-30 below zero.  The patrols for their safety will have to be pulled from their assignment until it is determined than it is once again safe.  The school patrol supervisor or principal will make the call on when to remove the patrols and when to allow the patrols to resume their duties.  Parents should contact the school office if they suspect threatening weather conditions in the area that might cause the school to remove the patrols from their corners.

THANK YOU FROM THE PTA Last Friday was the annual Make-It-Take-It family fun night.  It was an evening of crafts, dinner, friends, and fun.  A big thank you to the organizers: Danica Linssen, Anne Rutherford, Michelle McCafferty, and Christina Middleton.  They worked hard to continue this Mann tradition. Congratulations on a job well done!!  An additional thank you to Danica Linssen, who was the creative and organizational force behind the evening.

HELP KOWALSKI's HELP HORACE MANN Horace Mann School will be a recipient of the Receipts for Charity Program at Kowalski's Market.  How can you help?  Shop at Kowalski's Market (Grand Ave, 1 block east of Hamline) between January 1-March 31, 2007.  Place your receipt in the clear Lucite box labeled Horace Mann School.  The boxes are located near the exit.  The donation from Kowalski's will be based upon the number of receipts (not dollar total).  Shop at Kowalski’s and we will all benefit!

CD/DVD DISCS NEEDED In preparation for our Reading Rocks Readathon we are collecting CD and DVD discs. If you have discs at home or work that are no longer needed, please send them to school. As long as one side of the disc is without writing or logo it may be used.  Please call Maya Hanna if you have questions at 695-1877.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN AN AFTER SCHOOL ART PROGRAM FOR YOUR CHILD? That’s right!  After school art is a possibility!  We’ve decided to survey parents to determine whether there is enough interest in an after school art program.  If we have enough positive feedback from families we will begin to plan such a program.  We will again work with our district Community Education Program to secure an instructor.  Please contact Mr. Scott if you have questions at 651-293-8965.
