Illness/Medical Emergency/Dispensing of Medication

If a child is ill five consecutive program days or more, a 25% holding fee is charged retroactive to the first day of illness. A doctor’s note confirming the illness is required. If a child is ill less than five consecutive days, full fees are due.

A child will not be admitted to Discovery Club with any of the following symptoms:

Severe Cold or Sore Throat, Fever, Vomiting, Lice, Inflamed or Mattery Eyes, Diarrhea, Undiagnosed Rash

Parents/guardians need to notify the Site Manager of any contagious diseases (e.g., pink eye, strep throat, chicken pox) or head lice. When a contagious disease or lice has been reported, all parents/guardians will be notified and a notice will be posted.

If a child becomes ill at Discovery Club, the child will be isolated from the other children. Parents/guardians will be notified and asked to pick up the child as soon as possible. In the event of a medical emergency or accident, Discovery Club staff will first attend to the child with first aid. Unless it is a life threatening emergency, staff will first attempt to contact parents/guardians or emergency contact.

If the parent/guardian cannot be reached, staff will take whatever medical measures are necessary for the care and protection of the child. The school nurse will be consulted, if she/he is on duty. When necessary, 911 will be called and the child will then be taken by ambulance to Saint Paul Children’s Hospital or the nearest hospital when on a field trip. The Site Manager will also inform the School Principal and Discovery Club Division Manager of any emergencies and injuries.

All children enrolled in Saint Paul Public Schools are required to have on file a copy of their record of immunizations and their medical examination; Discovery Club staff may obtain a copy of these health records from the school nurse.

If a child is not enrolled in a Saint Paul Public School, a current medical report, including immunizations and signed by the child’s source of medical care, must be sent to the Discovery Club Administrative Office within 30 days of the child’s admission.

DISPENSING OF MEDICATION

Discovery Club staff follow the school district’s policy in regard to administration of medication. For medication prescribed for two weeks or longer, a written order signed by the prescribing health professional and the custodial parent/guardian is required. For medication prescribed for less than two weeks, a written request signed by the custodial parent/guardian is required. (Forms are available from the Site Manager.) Medications will be left with the Site Manager and dispensed at the appropriate time. Only medications stored in a pharmacy-labeled container and accompanied by a completed permission form will be administered.
