Beginning Orienteering combined earth science with practical outdoor skills. The naturalist discussed with the students how the compass has impacted human history. They talked about the earth’s magnetic field. Students learned the parts and proper use of a compass. Ask any 6th grader about red...Fred...or the shed. Students practiced getting a bearing in the classroom. They headed outside to practice pacing.

Then students navigated Eagle Bluff’s remote orienteering course. Working cooperatively and applying the compass knowledge was a highlight as students navigated a 14-point orienteering course through the woods. At each waypoint, students collected a portion of a quote. One example follows.
Baba Dioum said, “For in the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.”
