RE: Band Allocation for 08-09 school year

As I am sure you all read in last week’s Mann Perspectives (4/25), the district allocation for band next school year has been reduced from .5 (2.5 days per week) to .3 (1.5 days per week).  Needless to say this 40% reduction in funding will have an impact on the band program.  First, let me assure you that I will do my best to maintain the quality of the band program that has been built over the last several years.  There will, however, be some changes made to the current structure should this allocation reduction occur.

One of the main reasons the band at Horace Mann has been so successful is due to the ability to have small lesson groups.  This allows me to group students based on similar abilities and give adequate attention to each student’s individual needs.  Typically I have 20 lesson groups each week.  With the proposed changes, I will be able to have only 11.  Group sizes will be increased from around 2 students per group to up to 6 depending on student instrument choices and the number of students enrolled in band.

One other change that would likely occur would be the reduction or elimination of our small ensemble groups.  Those are put together for our winter holiday concert and spring concert, in addition to any special events that may occur.  They give our advanced students (typically in their second year of band) additional opportunities to perform more challenging pieces.

If you have any input, questions, or comments regarding the proposed changes I’d encourage you to contact Mr. Litwin or myself.  Also, there is a school board budget input meeting on Tuesday, May 20th at 360 Colborne St. where parents may voice their concerns.  Thank you for your continued support of the band program at Horace Mann School.
